From navigating the fast-paced development of a young nation in Qatar to leading strategic growth at one of Malaysia’s premier Islamic finance institutions, Associate Professor Dr. Mohamed Eskandar Shah’s journey reflects a deep commitment to advancing an industry where Malaysia continues to lead on the global stage.
As a Returning Expert Programme (REP) returnee, Dr. Eskandar serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ISRA Associates, a subsidiary of INCEIF University. In his role, he drives business growth, leads consultancy initiatives and works closely with organisations across the Islamic Finance ecosystem.
Building Expertise Beyond Borders
For several years, Dr. Eskandar built his career in Qatar, a country that offered a unique professional environment shaped by rapid development, international talent and ambitious national aspirations.
What stood out most during his time there was the opportunity to work alongside professionals from across the globe. Qatar’s ability to attract some of the best minds from different industries created an environment where diverse perspectives, skills and experiences came together to solve complex challenges.
Beyond the professional exposure, living in a young and rapidly evolving nation allowed Dr. Eskandar to witness firsthand how bold ideas could be transformed into reality. “Working with people from different backgrounds made the whole process enjoyable,” he shares. “You are not only contributing your own ideas but constantly learning from others as well.”
Lessons from a Nation Driven by Ambition
Among the many lessons Qatar offered, one stood above the rest: ambition.
For Dr. Eskandar, the country’s successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup demonstrated what can be achieved when a nation sets bold goals and commits fully to achieving them. “They aimed for perfection and were ambitious about it,” he reflects. “What impressed me was their ability to execute that vision and deliver on a global stage.”
It is a mindset he believes Malaysia can continue to embrace as it pursues its own aspirations for growth and international competitiveness.
Returning Home for Islamic Finance
Despite the experience gained abroad, Dr. Eskandar always saw Malaysia as the ideal place to build the next chapter of his career. The opportunity to take on a leadership position within INCEIF University was a significant factor in his decision.
“I always felt that if I wanted to excel in Islamic finance, Malaysia would be the best place to do it,” he says. Compared to Qatar, Malaysia offers a more mature and established ecosystem. “Without REP, I probably would not have considered coming back,” he shares. “People often underestimate how difficult it can be to adapt after being an expatriate,” he explains. “Having a strong reason for returning helps you stay committed for the long journey ahead.”
Returning home was ultimately about more than career progression for Dr. Eskandar. It was about pursuing his passion in Islamic Finance, contributing to an industry where Malaysia leads the world and playing a meaningful role in the nation’s future.
