Journeying from a trainee doctor in the United Kingdom (UK) to a subspecialist surgeon leading glaucoma care in Malaysia, Dr. David Woo Wen Wei’s story is shaped by precision in the operating theatre guided in equal measures by purpose, legacy and his decision to return home.
Today, Returning Expert Programme (REP) returnee, Dr. David serves under HMI Medical Group and is based at Regency Medical Care Centre in Johor Bahru as a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery. He manages a wide spectrum of eye conditions while also performing sight-saving surgeries for patients from across Asia.
The Making of A Surgeon Who Sees Beyond Vision
Dr. David has always known that he wanted a career that was “hands-on”, technical and impactful.
That clarity crystallised when he came across an article on the “Himalayan Cataract Project”, a humanitarian initiative focused on restoring sight for the underprivileged communities in Nepal, as a medical student in the UK. For Dr. David, that moment reframed ophthalmology not just as another medical specialty, but as a lifelong mission to restore patients’ independence and quality of lives by improving their vision.
This led him to begin his Ophthalmology training in Northern England in 2008. Dr David rotated through City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust at Sunderland Eye Infirmary in 2009.
Under the guidance of senior surgeons, he successfully completed his Ophthalmology training and subsequently pursued Glaucoma subspecialty training at the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Dr. David returned to Sunderland in 2017 as a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in glaucoma, a full-circle moment built on years of dedication, mentorship and clinical growth.
The Science of Preserving Sight
Ophthalmology, Dr. David explains, is a dual discipline, both medical and surgical. It involves anything from treating minor conditions like dry eyes and infections to managing complex diseases such as glaucoma, a silent condition that can lead to irreversible blindness.
As a glaucoma subspecialist, his focus is clear: preserving sight before it is lost, completely.
“Most patients only come when their vision has already been significantly affected,” he explains. “That makes treatment in Malaysia more challenging and urgent.” He notes that the key differences in clinical practice between the UK and Malaysia revolve mainly around the stage of disease presentation, with Malaysian patients tending to seek help much later in the process.
Beyond the Operating Theatre
Years spent living and training abroad shaped Dr. David not just as a surgeon but as a person.
He left home at 15 to pursue his education and moved to the UK when he was 17. From a young age, he rapidly understood the importance of adaptability and independence whilst also counting the cost of physical distance, having missed multiple family milestones and having extremely limited time with his loved ones. These sacrifices were not in vain, however, as they strengthened his resilience and resolve in the presence of adversity. Above all, Dr. David learnt to truly cherish and appreciate his Malaysian roots whilst also developing a relentless drive in the pursuit of excellence.
Despite a stable and successful career in the NHS, the idea of returning to Malaysia was never far from his mind. The pull was deeply personal, shaped by his identity as an “Asian at heart” and his desire to continue his late father’s legacy. His father was a respected general practitioner in Johor Bahru who had cared for generations of local families before passing away in 2013 from illness. “I wanted to look after the same patients my father once did,” he shares. “Patients who had known me since I was a child.”
After exploring other opportunities in Singapore, Australia, Abu Dhabi and within the UK, Dr. David eventually returned to Malaysia in 2019 under the Returning Expert Programme (REP). “I was thoroughly supported throughout and felt genuinely ‘wanted’ by Malaysia,” he reflects. The REP benefits also helped ease early financial uncertainty, allowing him to focus fully on building his practice and caring for his patients without the pressure of worrying too much about meeting his financial commitments. “It gave me the confidence to do what I was trained to do best,” he adds. “Delivering world-class healthcare to my patients.”

Dr. David’s work has now evolved beyond clinical practice.
As CEO and Founding Partner of Eagle Eye Centre Malaysia, he is helping to build a new generation of specialist eye care centres across the country.
