MALECS’ Rainbow of Culture (RoC) 2026: Sailing the Waves of Time

Story Snapshot

  • MALECS brought together students, Malaysians and local communities in Manchester through Rainbow of Culture (RoC) 2026, a vibrant celebration of Malaysia’s multicultural heritage and evolving traditions.
  • Through performances, exhibitions and cultural storytelling, the event welcomed 343 attendees while developing leadership, teamwork and event management skills among student organisers.
  • RoC 2026 demonstrates how Malaysian students abroad can serve as cultural ambassadors, fostering cross-cultural understanding while keeping Malaysia’s rich heritage alive on the global stage.

Founded in 2013 by Malaysian students in Manchester, the Malay Language and Culture Society (MALECS) is a student society that continues to uphold its mission of promoting the Malay language and sharing Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage with the international community.

Back in 2024, MALECS was MyHeart’s Young Global Leader (YGL) partner for their Sukaneka x Wau of Unity event. This year, MALECS is back with the Rainbow of Culture (RoC) 2026 event with the theme “Sailing the Waves of Time”. The event took audiences on a captivating journey through the evolution of Malaysian culture, from the 1950s to the present day. The event was held at Manchester Academy 1, Students’ Union, The University of Manchester on 22 February 2026.

The RoC event welcomed 343 participants, including students, Malaysians living in the UK and members of the local community to experience the vibrant diversity of Malaysia’s multicultural society. Attendees were treated to an exciting programme of performances, featuring both traditional and contemporary dance performances showcasing the rich and unique heritage of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Borneo cultures. The showcase also featured fashion shows, musical performances and interactive exhibition spaces that allowed visitors to explore Malaysian traditions, food and heritage in a lively and immersive setting.

Celebrating Malaysia’s Cultural Diversity

RoC has long been MALECS’ largest cultural event of the year, serving as a platform to introduce Malaysia’s unique multicultural identity to international audiences. The 2026 edition continued this tradition by highlighting the beauty of Malaysia’s cultural diversity through artistic performances and creative storytelling. Through carefully choreographed dances, music and visual elements, the event illustrated how Malaysian culture has evolved across generations while remaining deeply rooted in tradition.

Beyond the stage, exhibition booths and cultural displays allowed attendees to interact with Malaysian culture more closely. Guests could explore traditional clothing, cultural artefacts, and student-led stalls showcasing Malaysian food and crafts, creating a vibrant atmosphere that brought a piece of Malaysia to Manchester.

Months of Preparation

Behind the scenes, the success of RoC 2026 was made possible through months of meticulous preparation and close collaboration among the MALECS committee, performers and volunteers since July 2025. Training sessions and rehearsals began weeks in advance, culminating in a full rehearsal shortly before the event to ensure that every segment of the programme ran smoothly.

The organising committee worked tirelessly across multiple departments including logistics, performances, technical management and volunteer coordination to bring the event to life.

The event also served as a valuable platform for students to develop leadership, teamwork and event management skills while contributing to the promotion of Malaysian culture abroad.

Support from MyHeart

The victory of RoC 2026 was further strengthened through the support and exposure provided by the MyHeart platform. Through MyHeart, the event was able to reach a broader network of Malaysians living abroad, particularly students and young professionals across the UK.

In addition, the support helped MALECS enhance the overall event experience. It contributed towards improving logistical arrangements, supporting cultural exhibitions and ensuring that attendees could fully enjoy the performances and activities prepared by the organising team. This sponsorship played a significant role in amplifying the overall reach and impact of RoC 2026.

Challenges and Growth

Organising a large-scale cultural showcase presents its own challenges, from coordinating performers and rehearsals to managing technical arrangements and logistics on the day of the event. Ensuring a seamless programme flow while delivering an engaging experience for hundreds of attendees required careful planning and strong teamwork.

Through effective communication and dedication from the organising committee and volunteers, strong working relationships were established, allowing for a more seamless and positive experience. This did not only strengthen the teamwork within MALECS but also provided valuable lessons in leadership, coordination and cultural event management.

Looking Ahead

RoC 2026 marks another milestone in MALECS’ continued effort to promote Malaysia’s rich culture in the UK. By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to experience Malaysia’s traditions, music and performances, the event reinforces the importance of cultural exchange and unity.

With the enthusiastic response from attendees and participants, MALECS hopes to continue growing RoC in the coming years by introducing new creative elements and expanding its reach to an even wider audience. Through events like RoC, MALECS remains committed to sharing the beauty of Malaysian culture with the world.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
