From Classrooms to Candlestick Charts: How 226 Malaysian Students Learned to Trade Futures

Story Snapshot

  • Kancil Capital Student Investment Fund empowered 226 Malaysian students across multiple countries to explore futures trading through an immersive, education-first learning experience.
  • Through MYTC 2026, participants gained practical exposure to global financial markets, risk management and portfolio decision-making using real-world trading simulations.
  • Initiatives like MYTC are helping cultivate a globally competitive generation of Malaysian finance talent equipped with the knowledge, discipline and confidence to succeed in international markets.

What does it take to confidently trade futures in one of the world’s most liquid financial markets? For 226 Malaysian university students across UK, Germany, USA, Korea and Malaysia, the answer began with a login, a challenge dashboard and eight weeks of learning by doing.

The Malaysian Youth Trading Challenge (MYTC) 2026, organised by the Kancil Capital Student Investment Fund and run in partnership with TalentCorp’s MyHeart Young Global Leader (YGL) programme from 15 February to 10 April 2026, brought together Malaysian students abroad for an education-first trading simulation built around real market instruments: Equity Index Futures and Foreign Exchange (FX) Futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange CME Marketplace.

Where It All Started

Kancil Capital Student Investment Fund was founded in 2025 at the University of Manchester on a simple belief, that Malaysian students overseas deserve access to the kind of financial education that prepares them not just for exams, but for careers. Originally started by a group of friends, it was co-founded by student leaders including Amirul Haikal, Hazman Nor and Arif Firman to serve as Malaysia’s first UK student-led investment fund that bridge the gap between university finance courses and real-world capital markets.

MYTC 2026 grew out of that mission. The team noticed that while interest in finance careers was high among Malaysian students abroad, exposure to derivatives and futures markets, a cornerstone of institutional finance, remained limited. Most students had heard of equities and bonds; far fewer had any practical familiarity with futures contracts, margin mechanics, or risk-adjusted performance.

“We wanted to create something that felt real,” the organising team shared. “Not a quiz or a textbook exercise, an actual simulation where decisions had consequences, and where students would have to think like a portfolio manager.”

The partnership with MyHeart through YGL made that ambition possible, providing the structural support and reach needed to connect the programme with Malaysian talent communities across diaspora.

Learning First, Trading Second

MYTC 2026 was deliberately structured so that no one walked into the trading window cold. The programme opened on 15 February 2026 with a guided onboarding phase, giving participants access to a structured curriculum via the Challenge Dashboard. Topics covered included:

• Introduction to Futures and the CME Marketplace
• Equity Index Futures, structure, pricing and application
• Sector Futures and portfolio construction
• FX Futures, currency risk and hedging concepts

Live moderated sessions were hosted online featuring guest speaker, Dr. Luba Schoenig, the co-founder of UMushroom, a digital financial education and investment simulation platform founded in Switzerland. Followed by a session by portfolio manager Archie Chin from Prima Ekuiti, gave participants the chance to ask questions, discuss real market conditions and hear how professionals think about risk and return.

The competition trading window ran from 1 to 29 March 2026, during which participants executed trades on a live simulation platform. Crucially, the scoring methodology was designed to reward discipline, not just returns. Performance was assessed using a composite score accounting for return, drawdown management, and trading consistency. The aim was to discourage reckless risk-taking and instead surface participants who demonstrated sound judgement under pressure.

The Numbers That Tell the Story

226 students registered for the programme. Of those, 111 became active competition participants, a conversion rate of approximately 49%. In the context of an entirely voluntary, unpaid online simulation, that figure reflects a strong level of genuine engagement.

A Top 10 final leaderboard was published following the verification phase, with winners recognised via official announcement. The scoring process used platform-generated trade logs as the definitive source of truth, ensuring transparency and fairness across all participants.

In Their Own Words

Feedback from participants highlighted the value of the programme’s structured, education-first approach, particularly among those with little prior exposure to derivatives markets.

“Before the challenge, I only traded equities with theoretical futures knowledge. Now, hands-on experience filled up gaps like margin calculation, position sizing, rolling procedures, and disciplined risk management.”, MYTC 2026 Participant

“What I appreciated most was that the scoring didn’t just reward whoever took the biggest bets. It pushed me to think about risk management, which is something I now understand is actually more important than chasing returns.”, MYTC 2026 Participant

How MyHeart YGL Made It Happen

The partnership with MyHeart was central to bringing MYTC 2026 to life. Through their support, the programme was able to reach Malaysian students across UK universities, tapping into existing community networks and association channels that would have taken years to build independently.

MyHeart served as the connective tissue, linking Malaysian associations abroad with structured opportunities to develop their members’ professional capabilities in alignment with Malaysia’s talent development agenda. For Kancil Capital, the partnership validated the programme’s credibility and helped attract sponsor interest in talent identification opportunities.

“TalentCorp’s backing gave the challenge a level of legitimacy that opened doors,” the organising team noted. “Students felt the programme was tied to something meaningful, not just a fun activity, but a step towards their careers.”

What Comes Next

The success of MYTC 2026 has set a strong foundation for future editions. The Kancil Capital team is already exploring ways to deepen the programme, from extending reach to additional UK universities, to incorporating an in-person element such as an awards evening or industry networking session that brings together participants and sponsors face-to-face.

For now, the 2026 cohort of 111 active participants leaves the challenge with something no finance textbook fully provides: the experience of making real decisions under real market conditions and understanding, firsthand, what it means to manage a trade with discipline.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
