From Port Dickson to Auckland: Dave Ananth’s Journey to Fostering Legal, Financial and Diplomatic Excellence

For some, a career is a means to an end. For Dave Ananth, it has been a platform for creating meaningful change and building bridges between nations and industries. A lawyer, tax expert and former magistrate, Dave has dedicated his life to empowering communities through his expertise and leadership. As President of the New Zealand Malaysian Business Association (NZMBA) and a stalwart advocate for Malaysia’s global talent initiatives, Dave’s story is one of resilience, innovation and patriotism.

A Multidisciplinary Journey

Dave graduated from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch as a law student and was subsequently called to the New Zealand bar in 1989 and the Malaysian bar in 2001. After several years of practicing law in New Zealand, he returned to Malaysia in 1991 to complete his chambering at a law firm in Seremban and was then appointed as a magistrate. His passion for justice and his deep understanding of complex financial systems led him to specialise in white-collar crimes.

After a number of years in Malaysia, he returned to New Zealand, taking up a role with the Inland Revenue Department as a prosecutor, quickly specialising in tax evasion and fraud. These roles not only gave him deep insights into legal and financial frameworks but also equipped him with the skills to mediate and solve multifaceted challenges.

Eager to broaden his horizons, Dave eventually transitioned to private practice as a barrister in New Zealand while immersing himself in the country’s diverse business and cultural landscape. His adaptability and commitment to excellence earned him leadership roles, culminating in his presidency at NZMBA, where he actively fosters bilateral ties between Malaysia and New Zealand.

Connecting Communities and Building Networks

In his role at NZMBA, Dave plays a pivotal part in promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchange. The association hosts numerous events to bring together businesses, policymakers and communities from both nations.

As President, Dave has championed several key projects, including facilitating the signing of an MOU between NZMBA and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and advocating for the halal markets for Malaysia. By leveraging his expertise in finance and governance, Dave ensures that these ventures are not just profitable but also ethically and socially responsible. His ability to connect with people and build trust has been instrumental in these successes.

A Love for Service Over Profit

Dave’s dedication to NZMBA and other initiatives transcends monetary gain. He sees his work as a service to the Malaysian and New Zealand communities, emphasising the importance of collaboration and mutual growth. “It’s not about the financial rewards,” he often says. “It’s about creating opportunities and making a difference.”

Dave’s efforts extend beyond his professional circle. He is deeply committed to mentoring young Malaysians abroad, encouraging them to pursue their dreams while contributing to their homeland. Through NZMBA, he has spearheaded mentorship programmes and networking events that empower Malaysian expatriates to share their knowledge and experiences.

Resilience and Innovation in Leadership

Navigating the complexities of international business and law requires resilience and innovation—qualities Dave embodies. His journey has not been without challenges, but his ability to adapt and find creative solutions has been key to his success. Whether managing investor databases for potential mergers or advocating for fair trade policies, Dave approaches each task with a blend of diligence and ingenuity.

This resilience is particularly evident in his work during the COVID-19 pandemic. As global markets faced unprecedented disruptions, Dave played a crucial role in helping businesses navigate financial and legal uncertainties. His expertise provided much-needed clarity and support to those grappling with the crisis, further solidifying his reputation as a trusted advisor.

A Vision for a Better Malaysia

Dave’s commitment to Malaysia extends far beyond his professional roles. He firmly believes that Malaysians abroad have a vital role to play in the nation’s development. “Every contribution matter,” he asserts. “Whether it’s sharing expertise, fostering trade, or simply inspiring others, we all have a part to play in building a brighter future for Malaysia.”

Through his role in NZMBA, Dave supported the first Salam Dari Malaysia outreach by TalentCorp in New Zealand which gathered Malaysians across the country to engage and learn about MyHeart in-person. From venue management to connecting the team to the local Malaysian community there, Dave’s involvement and warm welcome played a role in the success of the outreach. Dave advocates for creating pathways that allow Malaysians abroad to contribute meaningfully and is particularly passionate about programmes that encourage knowledge transfer and collaboration, enabling those at home to benefit from global perspectives and innovations.

This aligns with one of the many initiatives under MyHeart which is to encourage collaboration across borders. Malaysians globally are experts in their respective fields and have rich knowledge that is valuable to the development of the nation.

A Legacy of Connection and Empowerment

Dave’s story is a testament to the power of connection and the importance of giving back. His journey from Malaysian courtrooms to the boardrooms of New Zealand reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence and service. By bridging gaps between industries, cultures and nations, Dave continues to inspire others to pursue their aspirations while remaining grounded in their roots.

As  MyHeart serves a platform to celebrate achievements of Malaysians abroad among others, Dave Ananth stands as a shining example of what it means to be a global citizen with a heart for Malaysia. His journey reminds us that patriotism knows no borders and that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good.

Just like Dave, you too can make a difference by giving back to Malaysia in your very own way. Whether you’re an active member in a Malaysian association in your city or working collaboratively on a project with fellow Malaysians, MyHeart is here to support.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
