Malaysian Students in Egypt: Empowering a New Era of Students Abroad

This story was submitted by the Malaysian Student Consultative Council of Egypt (MP3M)

On 9th and 10th July 2025, the Malaysian Student Consultative Council of Egypt (MP3M) organised a Virtual Career Fair (VCF) which successfully brought together hundreds of Malaysian students from across the globe. This two-day online event was filled with various opportunities, insights and inspiration. Supported by TalentCorp’s MyHeart initiative and Education Malaysia Egypt (EME), the event proved to be more than just a career fair.

Geographical distance no longer poses an obstacle for students to establish connections with the professional world. Malaysian students studying Islamic Law, Islamic Banking, Arabic Language, Usuluddin, Dentistry, Medicine and Social Work tuned in from Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

The event started strong with the career fair, followed by a corporate dinner which took place in-person at Dewan Malaysia Abbasiah Kaherah (DMAK) as a memorable closing for the meaningful event.

How It All Started

The drive to organise this VCF stemmed from the growing need to support Malaysian students in Egypt who often feel disconnected from job opportunities in Malaysia while studying abroad. This is especially apparent in Egypt, where majority of Malaysian students pursue studies in Islamic studies, medicine, pharmacy and other related fields. Over the years, many students have shared their struggles on transitioning from academic life overseas to navigating the Malaysian job market. Inspired by this, MP3M initiated discussions with EME and TalentCorp to provide an avenue for these students, which ultimately led to the first-ever VCF for Malaysian Students in Egypt.

The Goal of the Event

  • Connect Malaysian students across the world with potential employers by bridging gaps and fostering relationships between students and employers in Malaysia.
  • To showcase career opportunities in various sectors including leading industries such as Islamic finance, Islamic legal industry, education, healthcare, halal industry and more, in Malaysia.
  • Provide career guidance and professional development workshops by coaching students to refine their resumes, improve interview skills and prepare for job market demands.
  • Facilitate recruitment of top talent for Malaysian companies looking for multilingual, top performing students.

In short, the event was about equipping students with the right tools, knowledge and network to confidently map out their career path.

Event Highlights and Outcome

The VCF drew 200 registered participants from multiple countries and featured more than 10 participating organisations. This included Commerce International Merchant Bankers (CIMB), Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad (PruBSN), Kolej Universiti Antarabangsa Sultan Ismail Petra (KIAS), Institut Terjemahan dan Buku Malaysia (ITBM), IKRAM Health, One Dream Legacy Realty Sdn. Bhd., Andalusia Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd., Universiti Malaya, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and MUIS Travel & Tours Sdn. Bhd.

The event not only helped students discover job opportunities but also boosted their confidence to enter Malaysia’s job market. The event agenda covered career talks, job interviews and resume building workshops, as well as Q&A sessions with industry experts.

Partnerships and collaborations

The success of the event was made possible through strong collaboration. MP3M took the lead in organising and coordinating the event, while EME provided vital guidance, encouraging participation and ensuring alignment with educational goals.

TalentCorp, through its MyHeart initiative, played a strategic role, particularly in providing access to industry partners and providing financial support to make the event happen. TalentCorp’s MyHeart platform provided a mechanism for event management where students were able to register, explore other available events and leverage on other resources. The outcome of this partnership was to create a meaningful impact for the students.
Participant Feedback

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many appreciating the relevance and accessibility of the sessions. Here’s what a few participants had to say:

“The VCF gave exposure to so many career paths beyond the usual teacher or ustaz roles. The flexibility to join from anywhere was a major plus. Congratulations on organising the first virtual career event in the Middle East. Solid 8/10!” – Abbas Z., Islamic Law Student, Al-Azhar University

“This VCF gave me a different perspective about finding acjob in the future. Thank you so much for running this program. It helps a lot for students who will be fresh graduates soon. Hopefully there are more programmes like this in future.” – Iqbal S., Qiraat Student, Al-Azhar University

“It helps students to identify careers that are suitable for their field of study. Thank you to the organising team for your hard work and dedication. The event was well-planned and inspiring. I truly appreciate the effort put into bringing valuable experiences and amazing speakers to us. Keep up the great work!” – Al-Hakim, Islamic Sciences Student, Al-Azhar University

These positive and meaningful responses affirmed that the event met its targeted aim of providing greater clarity and direction in navigating life after university with full readiness.

Looking Ahead

This meaningful initiative revealed the vast potential of job opportunities awaiting Malaysian students abroad. Given the warm response and strong turnout, there are already plans to make the Malaysian Students in Egypt Virtual Career Fair an annual event. More features may be added in future editions, in order to increase the impact to the Malaysia students abroad attending this event.

For now, the 2025 edition stands as a remarkable milestone, showing what can happen when students, institutions and national bodies come together with a shared vision to empower Malaysian students abroad and bring them closer to the futures they aspire to build.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
