Ms. Louisa Foong

Music Composer

About Me

I’m a Malaysian-born pianist, composer, music producer, and music educator currently based in Los Angeles. I am the Founder of Pine Music Academy and also release original instrumental works as an independent artist. My background includes classical training and contemporary music studies, and my work today bridges performance, education, and creative production.

Beyond music, I see myself as a cultural bridge-builder — someone deeply invested in storytelling, community-building, and creating meaningful collaborations across disciplines. Whether through concerts, educational initiatives, creative partnerships, or digital media, I’m passionate about using the arts as a way to connect people across cultures and generations.

As a proud Malaysian Chinese, my heritage continues to shape both my identity and my creative vision, and I carry a strong desire to represent and elevate Malaysian talent and culture on an international stage.

What I do

I have a deep desire to nurture the next generation of artists through intentional mentorship and structured music education. Alongside this work, I serve professionally as a composer, producer, and arranger, with much of my early career taking place behind the scenes shaping musical projects and creative productions.

In recent years, I have stepped more fully into my role as a solo pianist and recording artist. Storytelling sits at the core of my creative work. I see music as a language that connects cultures, expresses identity, and builds community. Through performance, education, and collaboration, I aim to create artistic experiences that are meaningful and lasting.

What I’m looking for

I would love to be meaningfully involved in initiatives that elevate Malaysian talent and identity on a global stage. Whether through the arts, tourism, international events, or cross-disciplinary collaborations, I am deeply interested in contributing wherever Malaysian excellence is being represented beyond our borders.

With a background in athletics growing up, I have long admired the discipline, unity, and national pride embodied by both artists and athletes. I can naturally see myself supporting not only Malaysian creatives, but also professionals and athletes, helping amplify their stories through music, storytelling, and collaborative platforms. I believe there is powerful potential in bridging creative expression with national representation.

As someone fluent in Malay, English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, I move comfortably across cultures and communities. I take great pride in being Malaysian Chinese and carry a deep desire to represent Malaysia with authenticity, excellence, and heart. I am especially passionate about projects that promote Malaysian tourism, heritage, innovation, and identity in ways that are globally compelling yet rooted in who we truly are.

Coming from a family that runs a soy sauce business in Malaysia, I also hold a strong appreciation for our culinary heritage and the uniqueness of our flavors. I believe culture is experienced through sound, taste, language, and shared story. I would love to collaborate with fellow Malaysians in music, food, media, sports, and entrepreneurship to create projects that reflect the richness and diversity of our nation.

Whatever initiatives may include participation in global platforms, I would love to be considered. If there is a place where I can serve at the table and contribute meaningfully, I am ready to bring my creativity, leadership, and heart to the work!

Currently a Senior Research Fellow at Matthew Wood group and Chair, Early-Mid Career Researchers Committee at Department of Paediatrics, University of Oxford. Received her Ph.D., Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry from UNSW Dr. Lim is now working on understanding disease mechanisms and developing genetic treatments for neuromuscular diseases. Two of these strategies are now at later stages of development where she is collaborating with industrial partners to optimise the strategies in preparation for first-in-human clinical trials.

Format of the sharing session

The participants for the session consisted of students and academicians coming from various biological and related sciences background.

During the session, Dr. Lim shared about her experience and journey in the research world and delved into the new developments being made in genetic treatments (specifically in neuromuscular diseases). She also shared some tips and advice on how to be active in the biotechnology research industry.

Format of the sharing session

Our participants consist of students from various engineering field and various level of studies, from bachelor’s degree to PhD.

During the session, Dr Aid shared with us the step-by-step process involved in designing a car using a simulation software where he explained why certain components are designed in such ways and the importance of each component. He also shared some tips to students who are planning to go into the automotive field.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
