UCD M’Night: Malayana, A Night That Brought Malaysia Closer to Ireland

On 25 October 2025, Astra Hall at University College Dublin (UCD) came alive with colour, emotion and the sound of familiar Malaysian melodies. After nearly a year of preparation, the UCD Malaysian Society proudly presented its most anticipated annual cultural event, Malaysian Night 2025, themed “Malayana”.

Malaysian Night (M’Night) is UCD Malaysian Society’s annual flagship event that combines theatre, music and dance to showcase Malaysia’s culture and heritage. It serves as a platform for Malaysian students to express their creativity, connect with peers and celebrate their identity abroad.

More than just a stage production, Malayana represented a heartfelt reunion of culture and community. It brought together 269 guests, 19 sponsors and 70 dedicated crew members, including cast, dancers and technical teams. The evening celebrated not only the beauty of Malaysian arts but also the shared experience of belonging, a feeling that transcended distance for Malaysians living far from home.

A Story of Love, Identity and Courage

At its core, Malayana told the story of two colleagues, Dahlia and Fahim, who unexpectedly found themselves transported into a mythical world. As they navigate ancient curses, mystical figures and painful memories, the journey becomes one of self-discovery, forgiveness and love.

The play, written, directed, and produced entirely by Malaysian students, blended theatre, dance, and music across Malay, Chinese and Indian cultural influences. Traditional elements met modern storytelling, resulting in a production that felt both nostalgic and new.

Every moment on stage reflected the team’s deep commitment to their craft. From intricate choreography and vivid lighting to handmade props and detailed costumes, every department worked tirelessly to bring Malayana to life.

The Role of Talentcorp’s MyHeart Initiative

This year’s event was made possible through the support of TalentCorp’s MyHeart Young Global Leader (YGL) programme, one of the Platinum Sponsors for M’Night 2025.

As a MyHeart YGL partner, Malayana was part of the events available on MyHeart, hosting the event ticketing management. During the opening ceremony, MyHeart was introduced to the audience as a key partner helping Malaysians abroad, including students to stay connected to opportunities and communities back home. By the event day, more than a hundred students had registered on the platform, demonstrating the success of the collaboration and its relevance among Malaysian students in Ireland.

A Taste of Home in Dublin

No Malaysian celebration would be complete without food, and Malayana was no exception. During the intermission, the aroma of local favourites filled Astra Hall as guests enjoyed authentic Malaysian dishes from Tapau House and drinks from Nana’s Tea.

Invited guests were served Nasi Lemak catered by Tapau House, courtesy of UCD Malaysian Society, while the audience indulged in a variety of snacks and bubble tea. The atmosphere felt like a home away from home: cheerful, familiar and full of warmth.

Each guest received a thoughtfully curated goodie bag containing a batik coin pouch, Yeo’s products, Popo snacks, stickers, postcards and a custom tote bag designed by the M’Night PR team. The event ticket itself doubled as a 10% discount voucher at Nana’s Tea, and early bird ticket holders received a custom lanyard – a creative way to make every attendee feel part of the experience.

Overcoming Challenges Together

Behind the scenes, the road to Malayana was not without obstacles. The organising team faced challenges such as technical limitations with sound equipment, registration delays and tight scheduling between departments. Balancing a production of this scale alongside studies and part-time commitments tested the endurance of everyone involved.

Yet, through strong teamwork and resilience, the team overcame every hurdle. The creative, technical, and administrative departments worked hand-in-hand to keep the event running smoothly. Their ability to adapt, communicate, and stay united under pressure became one of M’Night 2025’s greatest achievements.

A Night of Connection and Celebration

Audience feedback after the event was overwhelmingly positive. Many shared that the story felt emotionally engaging and easy to follow, while others expressed appreciation for the event’s cultural authenticity and high production value.

Vendors reported strong sales and positive engagement with guests, while sponsors expressed satisfaction with the professionalism and visibility of their brands throughout the night. For the audience, it was more than just a show, it was an experience. For the crew it was a journey of growth, leadership and self-discovery.

Continuing the Legacy

The success of Malayana was made possible by the unwavering support of its sponsors and partners, including MyHeart by TalentCorp, Future Direct, Nana’s Tea, BiteBox, Yeo’s, Persatuan Pelajar Malaysia Cork (PPMC) and Badan Perhubungan Ireland (BPI).

Their trust in UCD Malaysian Society’s vision helped turn a student-led production into a professionally executed cultural showcase that united Malaysians and introduced Ireland to the richness of our heritage.

More than anything, M’Night 2025 proved that even far from home, Malaysians continue to carry the same values of unity, creativity and warmth. Malayana was not just a play; it was a reminder that “home” is not a place, but a feeling we create wherever we come together.

Samantha Chong

In 2022, we collaborated with KL City Opera and organised a masterclass with Samantha Chong, a Malaysian mezzo-soprano based in Hong Kong

Samantha Chong and a group of performers in colorful outfits celebrating on stage during a show

Objective

To develop the performing arts scene in Malaysia via a collaboration with a leading name in classical Italian opera.

Format of the masterclass

The masterclass was held over 2 days, where 4 participants were selected to perform an aria or duet. Samantha then provided verbal and demonstrative feedback to each participant for 7-9 minutes each, which included song and scene interpretation, and stage presence.

Outcome

Samantha made a conscious effort to focus her sharing NOT on singing, but on the various aspects of performance, something that Malaysian performers lacked. So, MyCollabs acted as a medium for her to guide the students in navigating the world of classical opera, including dealing with different stakeholders like conductors, music directors and repetiteurs.

The students, on the other hand, received a rare opportunity to undergo a masterclass conducted by a seasoned performer for free. They could then use the knowledge they gained to enhance their opera skills and hopefully, pursue a career as full-time professional opera singers, something which is a rarity in Asia.
